Beck’s Album Sales Have Gone up 3,000 Percent, and Tickets to His Concert are in Demand

beckIf you love rags to riches stories, then you’ll want to hear about Beck, the Los Angeles wunderkind. The superstar began his ride to fame in the 90s, and has become known for his sonically experimental music style. He hasn’t limited himself to just one genre either—Beck has dabbled in hip-hop, funk, soul, folk, alternative rock, country, and psychedelic. The singer has released twelve studio albums and is well known for his single, Loser. Beck brought it all home earlier this month after winning Grammys for Best Rock Album and Album of the Year. In the weeks since the singer took home the Grammys, his popularity has spiked, based on increased album sales and new concert bookings. In fact, according to Billboard, which tracked album sales for all Grammy winners in the week after the awards, sales of Beck’s most recent album – Grammy-award winning Morning Phase – increased more than 3,000 percent in the week following his Grammy win, with the album selling more than 73,000 copies.

How it all Started

But Beck hasn’t always been the golden kid on the music scene. His early life was filled with poverty, and living in an environment where he didn’t even feel safe going to school. His early musical career was no better. He was rejected after applying to a performance arts school in his hometown, and took odd jobs like leaf blowing and loading trucks. Then, in the 70s, when Beck was still a teen in Los Angeles, he began playing in local coffeehouses and small clubs. Then, after not seeing much success, he moved to New York City in the 80s and took place in the anti-folk movement. During his New York time, he mostly slept on friend’s sofas, went hungry, and according to the singer, got beat up a lot. It wasn’t long after that that he moved back home, and in the early 90s, he recorded Loser, which became a worldwide hit in 1994.

Fast Forward to Today

Beck’s win for Album of the Year came as a surprise to most critics, who expected the award to go to either Beyonce or Sam Smith, and prompted Kanye West to head for the stage, stopping just short of reprising his infamous interruption of Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech a few years ago. West’s later comments about Beck’s win sparked controversy, but the rapper recently conceded that he likes “Morning Phase,” and it is “potentially an Album of the Year.” Indeed it is, according the Grammys.

Fans can make that judgment for themselves during a busy concert week in May. Beck has signed to headline several shows that month, including two major music festivals, and tickets are selling fast for those shows. Beck fans can start the week rocking with the award-winning performer at the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama and end it at the annual Boston Calling indie music festival, where Beck will be headlining the Friday night lineup. Between the two festivals, Beck will take the stage in Memphis, North Charleston and Charlottesville, VA.
